Two men, Benedict Idega (38) and Hassan Abdulsalami (30) – were arraigned at an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrate’s Court for attempting to dupe Ekiti State Governor Ayo Fayose yesterday.
The duo were arrested on Sunday at Fayose’s home in Afao-Ekiti for revealing to him a “classified” document of the military tribunal on the 2014 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun states.
The suspects were charged on a two-count charges of conspiracy and forgery, laid against them by the police.
Chief Magistrate Idowu Ayenimo ordered that the accused should remanded in Ado-Ekiti Prison.
Idega and Abdulsalami were paraded at the state police command headquarters by the Commissioner of Police, Etop James.
The police chief said a letterhead with the inscription ‘Nigerian Army Force’ and a 57-page document purportedly from the Office of Special Adviser, Ethics and Values were obtained under false pretence with the intent to defraud Fayose.
James said: “They confessed that they intended to defraud the governor. And also “ confessed to have been former employees of a private security company and were attached to the Muhammadu Buhari Campaign team.
“The investigations about their activities are still ongoing.“
But Idega, who was interviewed by reporters, countered James’ claim.
He denied ever attempting to defraud Fayose.
According to the suspect, they were only in Ekiti to see the governor which, according to him, had been accomplished.
The suspect said: “We only used those documents to beat security so that we can gain access to the governor. “We didn’t have a sinister mission, nothing to achieve. “We didn’t demand for money from the governor. Our mission was just to see him.
“We discussed with him and when he suspected that the documents were forged, he decided to call the police.”
