Emir of Keffi dies, Buhari and others mourn

The Emir of Keffi, Alhaji Muhammadu Chindo-Yamusa II, has died at the age of 70.

The monarch, who until his death was the Chancellor of Nasarawa State University, passed away in the early hours of Friday in his palace after a brief illness.

Confirming the sad incident at a news conference in Keffi Local Government Area of the state, Alhaji Abdul Usman, a cousin to the late traditional ruler, said: “Our emir, the promoter of peace and culture, died this morning after a brief illness. His death is heartbreaking, painful but God gives life and takes it at will.

“The emir had contributed a lot to the development of not only Keffi, but to the development of Nasarawa State and the entire country while alive.”

According to the News Agency of Nigeria, the monarch, who was crowned in 1978, left two wives, 27 children and many grandchildren behind. Some of the early sympathisers at the palace of the late traditional ruler after the death was announced include the Emir of Lafia, Alhaji Mustapha Isah Agwai 1.

President Muhammadu Buhari while commiserating with the people of the state on the Emir’s passage, called for prayers for his family and all those he left behind.

In a statement by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, Buhari described the late emir as an advocate of peace and development.

“President Buhari joins the educational community in mourning the highly revered traditional ruler who will be greatly remembered as an advocate of peace and unity as a prerequisite for meaningful development in the country.

“The President believes that the late emir will be greatly missed and remembered as one who generously contributed to national development through his fatherly counsel and advice to those in authority.

“President Buhari particularly recalls the late Emir’s appeal to Nigerians to support the Federal Government’s effort to counter insurgency and other social vices in the country as well as his advocacy for education as bedrock for development.

“The President prays that Almighty Allah will grant Alhaji Yamusa eternal rest and provide a successor who will do even more for the peace, development and prosperity of the people of Nasarawa State.”
